With lone sub-par round, Campbell leads Fall Publinx

September 28, 1997|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

Kevin Campbell dipped 1-under par on the back nine to furnish the only sub-par round of the annual Fall Publinx tournament of the Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation at Mount Pleasant Golf Course yesterday.

Campbell shot 36-3470 on the 6,500-yard, par-36-35 course, and took a one-stroke lead at the halfway mark. Ross Ellberg matched par with 36-3571.

The leader, a 1-handicapper who plays from Geneva Farm GC in Harford County, got to 2-under with a birdie at the demanding uphill 14th, then bogeyed the 15th and parred the last three holes.

Ellberg, a regular in publinx events, had two birdies and two bogeys on each nine. Three of his birdies were on putts in the 20-25-foot range. He turned the back nine even, then birdied Nos. 1 and 2, before giving them back with bogeys at the sixth (missed green) and seventh (three putts).

His best publinx finish has been a third in the fall event two years ago. The Owings Mills resident carries a 3 handicap.

Burrell Kilmer birdied his last hole, the 18th, and ended 38-3472. Three publinx veterans followed, as Drew Forrester and Blair Laubach had 74s and Tony Narciso 75.
