Disabled man killed when car hits pole

September 28, 1997

A Yellow Van Services car veered out of control late Friday and hit a steel pole in West Baltimore, killing a paraplegic passenger and leaving the driver in serious condition, police said.

The passenger, William E. Williams, 47, of the 700 block of E. 43rd St., was being driven home from his job at a Catonsville Wal-Mart when the car veered onto the median in the 5100 block of Baltimore National Pike, said Officer Raymond Howard, an accident investigator for the city police.

Yellow Van provides transportation for the disabled in the area under contract with the state.

The driver, Franzontra Gaither, 44, of the 300 block of Chapelgate Lane was in serious condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center last night.
