Hits and misses

September 25, 1997|By Roch Kubatko

On the field: With Toronto in front 2-0, catcher Benito Santiago led off the fifth inning with a double. But Scott Kamieniecki retired the next three batters -- none getting the ball out of the infield -- and the Orioles scored five times in the sixth.

In the dugout: Cito Gaston wasn't in it for the first time since May 15, 1989. He was fired before yesterday's game and left SkyDome after meeting with his players.

In the clubhouse: "When something like this happens, it kind of makes you think that it's inevitable. It's going to happen to almost anybody. It's just a matter of time." -- Orioles general manager Pat Gillick on the firing of Gaston, his manager when Gillick was Toronto's GM.
