Brundred, Vardaman qualify for Mid-Amateur N.C.'s Simson medalist with 69 as six advance

STAFFORD, VA. — BETHESDA -- Ben Brundred III and Jack Vardaman, members of host Congressional Country Club, were among six players out of 114 starters yesterday to earn places in next month's U.S. Mid-Amateur championship in Dallas. The medalist was Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C., whose 1-under-par, 35-3469 was three strokes clear of the field.

Brundred, who shot 73, will be making his third trip to the national tournament. His round included one birdie and four bogeys, three of them on the back-nine par-3's of the 6,588-yard Gold Course.

Vardaman, an infrequent entrant in recent years, had a previous national appearance in 1983. Yesterday, he bogeyed the first four holes, then shot 1-over over par the rest of the way. He won a five-for-one playoff with a par at the second extra hole.

They and Simson were joined by first-time qualifiers Mike McCarthy and Vance Welch, and Joel Sandler, going for the second straight year.

Simson, an eight-time qualifier and two-time North and South titlist, who chose Congressional over the North Carolina qualifying site, had three birdies and two bogeys.
