A 21-year-old Honduran man is being held in the Howard County Detention Center on $25,000 bail after being charged with the attempted rape of a 12-year-old girl in an apartment in Wilde Lake.

Pedro Padilla Perdona was arrested Monday and charged with first- and second-degree assault, sex offense in the fourth degree, second-degree attempted rape and false imprisonment.

According to court documents, Perdona has no fixed address. Sources told police that Perdona has been in the United States for either two weeks or two months, the documents said.

Police arrived at an apartment in the 5200 block of Brook Way in Columbia's Wilde Lake village at 5: 40 p.m. Monday after neighbors called 911 to report hearing a girl screaming next door.

According to court documents, officers knocked on the door of the apartment and a girl told them through the door that a man had pulled her into the apartment against her will. The front door knob inside the apartment was broken off, and the girl couldn't leave, she told police.

The girl told police the man locked himself in the bathroom after hearing police knock. Officers forced themselves in and made an arrest after a brief struggle.
