September 23, 1997|By Peter Schmuck

On the field: Right-hander Brian Moehler struggled in the first inning, delivering a pair of bases-loaded walks to Cal Ripken and Jeffrey Hammonds to stake the Orioles to a quick two-run lead.

In the dugout: After starting two games in a row, outfielder Eric Davis was not in the starting lineup last night. He had hoped to start three games in a row, but he and manager Davey Johnson agreed that it would make more sense to rest him last night.

In the clubhouse: Johnson on how much he wants to become only the third American League manager to take a team wire-to-wire: "Would I like it? Yes. Would I sacrifice what's right for the team going into the postseason for it? I don't think so."
