Hoping to raise $100,000 for Baltimore's cash-strapped recreation department, a star-studded golf tournament will pair 31 sports figures with city business leaders in 18-hole rounds next month.

Fans of the Ravens, Washington Redskins, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles will get the chance to play alongside some of their idols Oct. 17.

Each golfer would pay $250 to be on a team. One sports figure will be assigned to each team.

The tournament will start at 8 a.m. On Saturday, the department will hold a sports memorabilia show and autograph signing.

Some of the scheduled participants include former Dallas Cowboy Tony Dorsett, former Pittsburgh Steeler Franco Harris and former Colt Art Donovan.

For months, Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke has maintained that the city cannot afford to keep open Baltimore's 58 recreation centers.

He has charged the acting recreation department chief to come up with ways to get the department to pay its own way.

This fund-raiser is one of the department's first efforts.

Tickets can be purchased at the recreation department.
