North Carolina State's Nick Dutka dribbled down the right side of the field and connected for a goal at the 36-minute mark as the visiting Wolfpack (5-1) upset second-ranked Maryland, 1-0, at Ludwig Field in a men's college soccer match.

This marks the first loss of the season for the Terrapins (5-1-2), after blanking N.C. State, 7-0, in last year's Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

Maryland outshot N.C. State 11-7 and held the Wolfpack to three shots on goal in the second half. Wolfpack goalie Dan Alexander had six saves, three more than the Terrapins' Andy Kirk.

St. Mary's 2, Catholic U. 0: Ben Thomassen scored at 11: 38 and John O'Connor added an insurance goal at the 38-minute mark as visiting St. Mary's (6-1) shut out Catholic University (2-4) despite being outshot, 18-6.

Women's soccer

St. Mary's 2, Catholic 0: Tara Jensen scored one goal and assisted on the other to power visiting St. Mary's (4-2) past Catholic University (5-3).

Field hockey

Maryland 4, American 1: Marloes Platzek scored all four goals and set a school record by scoring a goal in her sixth consecutive game as the third-ranked and host Terps (8-0) defeated the Eagles (2-4) at College Park.

Platzek's consecutive games scoring streak broke the previous record of five straight set by Lisa Buente in 1990.
