Hits and misses

September 19, 1997|By Roch Kubatko

On the field: Mike Bordick's home run leading off the fifth inning was his sixth this year, two short of his career high set in 1995 while with Oakland.

In the dugout: There was plenty of left-handed hitting on the bench. Manager Davey Johnson didn't start Brady Anderson, B. J. Surhoff, Rafael Palmeiro and Harold Baines.

In the clubhouse: Eric Davis was asked if he's been enjoying more than he thought he would all the positive attention since his return. "You can't do anything but enjoy it. There's not a grade of enjoyment. You don't put joy on a scale of one to 10. Joy is joy. And I've been getting a lot of joy."
