Get to know 'Meego'

At a glance

Bronson Pinchot returns to TV on CBS tonight in a show that should prove harmless fun for kids and at least bearable for adults.

Pinchot is "Meego" (8: 30 p.m.-9 p.m., WJZ, Channel 13), an alien who crash-lands near a house where dad (Ed Begley Jr.) is desperately searching for a nanny to care for his three kids. Meego soon fills the bill, much to the delight of brothers Alex and Trip (Erik Von Detten and Jonathan Lipnicki), who love the fact that he can fly, change shape, replay time, talk to dogs, and probably 100 other things that we'll discover as the season progresses.

Of course, they have to keep Meego's powers secret from dad, as well as sis (Michelle Trachtenburg), who's too much of a blabbermouth to keep a secret.

Think of E.T. starring in "Mary Poppins," and you've got the idea.

Pinchot makes for a fine alien (he had plenty of practice in "Perfect Strangers"), and Lipnicki is so cute, he'll either warm your heart or raise your blood sugar to dangerously high levels. Lipnicki proved in "Jerry Maguire" that he can be cute without being cloying, although tonight's premiere strays a bit too close to the latter. Among other things, directors need to use fewer shots where he's obviously looking off-camera for dialogue or coaching.
