Hits and misses

September 17, 1997|By Roch Kubatko

On the field: The Orioles would like to keep Cleveland's David Justice off it. He had two more hits in Game 1 and only a leaping catch by Jeff Reboulet kept him from two in the nightcap. He finished the season hitting .429 (15-for-35) against the Orioles.

In the dugout: Manager Davey Johnson had right-hander Brian HTC Williams warming in the bullpen in the first inning of Game 1 after five of the first six batters reached against starter Nerio Rodriguez. But Johnson didn't need to make a move until two outs in the seventh.

In the clubhouse: "I take a Mussina out after a hundred pitches, I take Kamieniecki out after 77 after he had a tired arm. I'm trying to win a war, I'm not trying to win a battle. It's the long push for me. I don't care if it's over people's heads or if they don't like it. That's the scenario. And I've been right more than I've been wrong." -- Johnson.
