Recipes for old favorites

"Dairy Favorites of the South" is the best little freebie to come across my desk in quite a while. Put out by the Southeast Dairy Association Inc., the brochure gives recipes for 10 classics like cheese grits, lemon buttermilk pie, Low Country oyster stew and sour-cream pound cake. Don't even think of substituting margarine for butter or milk for half-and-half in these decadently good, definitely high-calorie, old-fashioned favorites. If you're still interested, Call 800-651-6455 and ask for brochure #5.

Real food

Sometimes the best cookbooks are community cookbooks. They aren't gimmicky and are full of recipes real people use and love. Not only does the new Sinai Hospital Auxiliary cookbook have over 400 "amateur" recipes, it also includes a section of recipes from local chefs and caterers and a section of helpful household hints. "Not Just Another Cookbook" ($12.75) is available at the hospital gift shop or by calling 410-601-5032.

Local wines

Nine Maryland wineries will be showcasing their vintages at the Maryland Wine Festival this weekend at the Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster. On the program: educational seminars, tastings, entertainment, food and an amateur winemaking contest. The admission fee of $13 includes 10 (1-ounce) samples of Maryland wines; those under the legal drinking age with a paying adult will be admitted free. Call 800-654-4645.
