Hits and misses

September 16, 1997|By Roch Kubatko

On the field: Rafael Palmeiro delivered his 100th RBI in the first inning of Game 1, singling to left-center field to score Aaron Ledesma for a 2-0 lead. It's the fourth time in Palmeiro's career he has reached the milestone.

In the dugout: Manager Davey Johnson came out of it in Game 1 to briefly dispute an umpire's ruling that ended the fourth inning. Chris Hoiles was called out on an appeal for failing to tag second base on his way back to first after Jeff Reboulet lined to deep left.

In the clubhouse: "Winning the division, that's what we're after. We're not going to have any champagne." -- Johnson, on the lack of enthusiasm in the clubhouse over clinching at least a wild-card berth.
