September 15, 1997|By Roch Kubatko

The Rochester Red Wings became the Orioles' third minor-league affiliate to claim a championship yesterday, defeating the Columbus Clippers, 4-3, in the decisive fifth game of the International League's Governors' Cup. Columbus is the New York Yankees' Triple-A affiliate.

Julio Moreno, who spent the entire regular season at Double-A Bowie, was the winning pitcher, and Brian Shouse went 1 1/3 innings for the save.

The Red Wings scored three times in the first inning. Danny Clyburn and Tommy Davis had RBI singles, and catcher Tim Laker tripled in a run.

Rochester joins Bluefield (Rookie-level Appalachian League) and Delmarva (Single-A South Atlantic) as titlists.
