Frostburg defense, Jones' 171 shut down Salve Regina, 24-7 State

Freshman tailback Orlando Jones came off the bench to rush for 171 yards and two touchdowns yesterday, and host Frostburg State opened its season by holding Salve Regina to 23 yards of offense in a 24-7 win.

Jones rushed for 155 yards and both scores in the second half as the Bobcats scored the last 24 points of the game. Jones scored the last two touchdowns on runs of 58 and 34 yards.

The lone score by Salve Regina (0-2) was set up in the first minute of the game when Bobcats quarterback Jason Henry was intercepted deep in Frostburg territory. Pat Eldridge scored on a 3-yard run two plays later.

Western Maryland 30, Juniata 8: Quarterback Ron Sermarini threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another to lead the Green Terror (2-0) past Juniata (0-1) in a nonconference game.

Sermarini, a sophomore, connected with classmate Marc Alegi for a 5-yard touchdown 2: 41 into the game after Western Maryland received the opening kickoff and drove 56 yards in eight plays. His 12-yard scoring pass to junior running back Gavin DeFreitas 1: 33 before halftime increased Western Maryland's lead to 23-0.

Juniata scored its lone touchdown on a 73-yard pass from quarterback Dave Houser to Jason Falvo in the third quarter.

Sermarini completed 21 of 31 passes for 227 yards. DeFreitas topped the 100-yard mark for the second consecutive game, finishing with 114.
