Hits and misses

September 12, 1997|By Roch Kubatko

On the field: A week ago in New York, Cal Ripken knocked Yankees starter Andy Pettitte out of the game in the first inning with a line drive that glanced off the pitcher's hand before hitting him in the face. Last night, Ripken did Pettitte a favor by failing to backhand a grounder from Derek Jeter in the third inning, leading to two unearned runs.

In the dugout: Manager Davey Johnson didn't give Roberto Alomar a third consecutive start at second base because of the wet field. Aaron Ledesma took Alomar's place and batted second.

In the clubhouse: Eric Davis said he visualized the day when he would put on his uniform again and play. "I didn't know how it would pan out, but those were my thoughts, and those are my prayers. And I'm just close to my prayers being answered."
