Yankees update

A week ago this was Armageddon. Now it's a relative sideshow. With the Yankees losing last night, the Orioles take an 8 1/2 -game lead into the series. Yankees owner George Steinbrenner apparently disregarded the Orioles' 7-1 record against his team last week when he predicted a comeuppance for the AL East leaders should they meet again in the playoffs. The Yankees are assured of their first losing season against the Orioles since 1989. Three more wins by the Orioles this weekend would give them 10 in a season against New York for the first time since 1982. Pettitte will start tonight for the first time since taking a Cal Ripken line drive off his left thumb, nose and mouth last week. On Saturday, Rogers receives a rematch against Mussina, who left Sunday's start with a cut right index finger. Mussina is expected to throw today for the first time since the incident. The highest-percentage pitcher in baseball is only 2-7 in his career against the Yankees.
