Recreation Department to offer dance classes in coming months Styles will range from country to ballet

The county Department of Recreation and Parks is offering classes in dance styles ranging from ballet to country line dancing over the next several months.

The ballet and pre-ballet classes, taught by Francesca Biagini, start next week and run for 12 weeks at a cost of $55 for the session.

Pre-ballet, designed for kindergartners and first graders, emphasizes simple barre work, rhythms, positions and steps. It is offered at 3: 30 p.m. Tuesday at Cape St. Claire Elementary School, 931 Blue Ridge Road in Cape St. Claire; 3: 45 p.m. Wednesday at Millersville Elementary, 1601 Millersville Road, and 4: 30 p.m. at the South County Senior Center on Stepney Lane in Edgewater.

Ballet classes for second graders and older students are offered after the pre-ballet classes at the same schools.

Tara Moore will teach jazz and hip hop dancing to elementary school students at the South County senior center for eight weeks beginning Sept. 27. Classes for Kindergartners through second grade are from 1: 30 p.m. to 2: 30 p.m., and classes for third through fifth graders start at 3: 30 p.m.

Kelly Moore will teach four classes on Saturdays beginning Oct. 4 at Severna Park High School, Robinson and Benfield Roads in Severna Park.

Beginner Hip Hop Jazz for grades 1 to 5 will be taught from 9 a.m. to 9: 45 a.m. A Hip Hop Jazz I class for grades 2 through 6 meets from 10 a.m. to 10: 45 a.m. Classes for grades 3 to 7 are from 11 a.m. to 11: 45 a.m. and Beginning Teen Hip Hop Jazz for grades 7 to 12 is from noon to 12: 45 p.m.

The sessions cost $35.

The 10-week country line dancing sessions start at 7: 30 p.m. Sept. 22 at Arundel Middle School, 1179 Hammonds Lane, Odenton.

Other sessions start at 6: 45 p.m. Sept. 23 at Severna Park Middle School, 450 Jumpers Hole Road, Severna Park. Couples country line dancing will be taught at 8: 15 p.m. there.

Country line dancing for teens will be taught at Southern Middle School, 5235 Solomons island Road, Lothian, beginning at 7 p.m. October 2. Lessons for adults start at 8 p.m.

Programs guides, which contain registration applications, are available at all county buildings and public libraries. Registration can be submitted by mail or at the County Recreation and Parks offices, 1 Harry Truman Parkway, Annapolis.
