Same handgun used Monday in 2 slayings

A pregnant woman who was killed Monday on a West Baltimore street was shot with the same handgun used to kill a man who was slain nearby, city police said yesterday.

Detectives, however, do not know whether the dead woman was a bystander hit by a stray bullet or was killed because she witnessed the man getting shot, police said.

"She was probably in the wrong place and wrong time," said NTC Officer Angelique Cook-Hayes, a police spokeswoman.

Police identified the dead man yesterday as Troy Brinson, 26, of Brooklyn, N.Y. Cook-Hayes said detectives believe his slaying was drug-related, but she would not elaborate. She said Brinson was being chased by a gunman when he was shot about 1: 40 a.m. in the 1500 block of Presstman St.

The woman, Loretta Chapman, 30, of the 300 block of Linnard St. was found about 2: 15 a.m. a block away, in the 1500 block of School St. She had been shot in the head and was pronounced dead that morning at Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Chapman was 17 weeks pregnant.

Police have made no arrests.
