McDonogh defense leads way past Centennial, 3-0 Field hockey

September 10, 1997|By Stan Rappaport

McDonogh was the better field hockey team yesterday in its game at Centennial. And that was just the point.

"Everyone's main focus was to play as a team and not as individuals," said McDonogh's Kim Yeargin after the 3-0 victory. "Today was a really good showing of how we can play together."

Katie Higdon scored twice and Phyllis Byrd once as sixth-ranked McDonogh (2-0) took control early and never allowed Centennial (0-1) to get untracked. McDonogh's defense -- led by Kirsten Doub, Vanvisa Attaset and Becca Johnson -- held 13th-ranked Centennial to five shots.

"The defense is the backbone of our team," McDonogh coach Cathy Schorreck said. "It's incredibly strong."
