A 31-year-old Pasadena man was killed Sunday when his van sideswiped one telephone pole, bounced off another and crashed into a tree in front of a church in the the 4700 block of Mountain Road.
William Alan Armentrout, 31, of the 8400 block of Lockwood Road was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident was the first of two on Mountain Road in the hours after midnight Sunday, county police said.
In the second crash, Lennell V. Boone, 33, of the 7900 block of Caldwell Road in Pasadena was thrown from his bicycle when it was struck by a car. He was treated at North Arundel Hospital and released.
Police said Armentrout had been drinking late Saturday with several friends. Before midnight, he had his brother Kevin drive him to a friend's home, where he picked up a 1986 Chevrolet van registered to Joseph R. McDevitt, of Glen Burnie.
Police could not explain why Armentrout was driving McDevitt's van. McDevitt could not be reached.
William Armentrout followed his brother west on Mountain Road but passed him near Long Point Road, police said.
Kevin Armentrout told officers he saw the van speed down the shoulder of the road and sideswipe a telephone pole, which split. The van hit a second telephone pole, slid sideways down the westbound lanes, then ran off the right shoulder and hit a tree in front of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church.
The van flipped and came to rest between two trees in front of the church, police said.
The impact ripped the roof and driver's side off the van, police said. Armentrout was ejected from the van before it came to rest, police said.
About three hours later, Boone was riding a bicycle east on the shoulder of Mountain Road near Route 100 when a vehicle hit him from the rear, pushing his bike onto a traffic island. Boone was thrown into several street signs, police said.
Boone, who suffered facial cuts, walked to his home, where relatives drove him to the hospital, police said. Boone had no description of the vehicle that hit him.
