'Happy Days' is here again, with or without Chachi

Best bet

To Chachi or not to Chachi? That's the question on Nick-at-Nite this week.

Through Friday, Nickelodeon will be devoting eight hours of its daily evening programming to reruns of "Happy Days" (8: 30 p.m.-12: 30 a.m.), that '70s sitcom about how wonderful and harmless life was in the '50s. But this isn't just any old "Happy Days" marathon. For the folks at Nick have a question to ask:

Do you prefer your "Happy Days" with or without Chachi?

Chachi, you'll recall, was Fonzie's cousin, played by that renowned thespian Scott Baio. He joined the show in 1977, about one-third of the way through its 10-year run, eventually became boyfriend to Richie's sister, Joanie (Erin Moran), and was spun off to a show half his own ("Joanie Loves Chachi").

To find out just how devoted "Happy Days" fans are to the Chach-man, Nick-at-Nite is running four reruns featuring him every night (tonight's batch includes the one where Joanie and Chachi's car breaks down after they sneak off to a Beach Boys concert, forcing them to spend the night in a hotel room), followed by four shows without a Chachi in sight (including, tonight, Fonzie's motorcycle leap over 14 garbage cans). Viewers will be asked to vote their preference.

Me? I'll be turning the TV on around 10: 30.
