Indians update

The underachieving Indians were virtually handed the AL Central race when the Chicago White Sox disarmed shortly before the July 31 trade deadline. The Indians are 25-25 since July 18 and 31-27 in the second half. Of the Indians' 74 wins, 21 have come with three or more home runs. The Indians are only 22-23 against the AL East and 19-25 vs. the AL West. Third baseman Matt Williams carried a 22-game hitting streak into last night's game. In that span he had hit six home runs with 26 RBIs. Right fielder Manny Ramirez has 11 home runs in his last 34 games. First baseman Jim Thome is four home runs shy of 40. David Justice had hit in 25 of his last 28 games. The Indians traded for outfielder Bip Roberts on Aug. 31. Roberts has been installed as the leadoff hitter in place of enigmatic Marquis Grissom, who has been ordinary despite hitting in 12 of his past 13 games. Grissom has batted ninth in the Indians' past 26 games.
