TOWSON -- Dozens of roses will be given away Wednesday as part of Good Neighbor Day, an unofficial celebration of friendship sponsored by area florists.

One florist, Raimondi's, has pledged to give away 100,000 long-stemmed roses to honor the day. Good Neighbor Day was started in 1994 by Brook Jacobs, a Jackson, Miss., florist who said he dreamed of a national observance where "communities reached out to each other."

Last year, florists gave away more than 2 million roses nationwide in the event that encourages patrons to keep one rose and give 11 away to acquaintances and friends as a caring gesture.
