CHESTERTOWN -- Shelley Savage made a 50-foot bunker shot on the 18th hole to clinch the annual women's amateur championship of the Middle Atlantic Golf Association at wind-swept Chester River Yacht & Country Club yesterday.

The birdie enabled Savage, the 1991 champion from Army Navy CC in Arlington, Va., to shoot a closing 76 for a 36-hole total of 151. This marked her first title in several years, although she has been a runner-up in the Virginia women's stroke-play championship three of the last five years.

Chris Epperly, the 1993 winner from Virginia Beach, Va., who had made up an earlier five-shot deficit to take a one-stroke lead after a birdie at the 12th hole, was tied for the lead prior to Savage's winning shot.

With virtually no shot from a left-side bunker at 18, Epperly ran the ball past the cup, then missed coming back to settle for a 2-over-par 73, and 153.

Ronda Henderson, of Lanham, the other member of the threesome, also bogeyed the last hole to finish 80-74--154. "I hit a bad chip," she said of the shot that led to it.

The outcome turned on the par-3 16th hole where Epperly, leading by a shot, made double-bogey from a green-side bunker, and Savage made bogey after hitting it into a place from where she had no chance to get the ball close to the hole.

"I thought I'd get overwhelmed, the way they were making birdies," said Savage, a Navy commander stationed at Bethesda Naval Hospital. "But I hung in there. At the last hole, I was pin-high and hit what turned out to be a perfect shot."
