AXIS Theatre opens its 1997-1998 season tonight with the Baltimore premiere of Terrence McNally's 1995 Tony Award-winning play, "Love! Valour! Compassion!"

The poignant drama, about a group of gay men who spend three summer holiday weekends at an upstate New York country house, features a cast headed by Stephen Antonsen, Brian Jacobs, Mark Bernier and Patrick Martyn. Direction is by Terry J. Long, who has staged several other local productions of McNally plays. (The theater cautions that the show includes some nudity and profanity.)

Show times at AXIS, 3600 Clipper Mill Road, are 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, with matinees at 2 p.m. Sept. 21, Sept. 28 and Oct. 5 (the final performance). Tickets are $10 and $14, except tonight's opening, which is $18. Call 410-243-5237.
