Hits and misses

September 03, 1997|By Roch Kubatko

On the field: Chris Hoiles stretched a single into a double with one out in the second inning, barely sliding in ahead of the throw. But his aggressiveness caught up to him one batter later when he was thrown out by right fielder Gary Sheffield trying to score on Mike Bordick's single.

In the dugout: Manager Davey Johnson said that, ideally, Brady Anderson could use another day or two off. But with so many players banged up, these aren't ideal circumstances, so Anderson started in center field. He fouled a ball off his foot, adding to his leg miseries.

In the clubhouse: "I might think about adding another infielder because I'd like to be able to give these guys a rest. But [Mike] Bordick doesn't want out of there. [Jeff] Reboulet acts like he doesn't want out of there, but he's got ice all over him. Robbie [Alomar] can't play yet. I worry because we're hobbled. I want to be getting healthy over the next two weeks." -- Johnson.
