Spirit's 20-game home schedule is one big weekend at Arena

As the Baltimore Arena's prime tenant, the Spirit has an exceptionally attractive home schedule for its sixth season in the National Professional Soccer League.

The NPSL announced yesterday that of the Spirit's 20 home games, 19 are on weekends -- nine on Fridays, nine on Saturdays and one on Sunday afternoon. The only other game is on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 10: 35 a.m., when every elementary and middle school in the area will be invited, and speakers on an educational theme are scheduled.

For the first time in its six years in the NPSL, the Spirit will open on the road, Oct. 25 against the Philadelphia Kixx. The home opener is Nov. 1 against the St. Louis Ambush.

The league, for its 14th season, has been trimmed from 15 to 13teams. Former Spirit coach and general manager Kenny Cooper's Tampa Bay Terror and the Toronto Shooting Stars have dropped out for at least a season to try to get their financial affairs in order.

The Columbus Invaders are moving to Montreal and will be rechristened the Impact.

The Spirit again will be in the American Conference's East Division with the Harrisburg Heat and Philadelphia, playing each six times. The Central Division has the Cleveland Crunch, Cincinnati Silverbacks and Milwaukee Wave.

In the National Conference, the Buffalo Blizzard, Detroit Rockers, Edmonton Drillers and Montreal form the North Division and the defending champion Kansas City Attack, Wichita Wings and St. Louis form the Midwest.
