Maryland shuts out Hofstra in soccer, 2-0 Sardis, Armas score goals

Navy loses, Towson wins

Jason Sardis and Steve Armas each scored second-half goals to lead Maryland to a 2-0 win over Hofstra yesterday in men's college soccer in Hempstead, N.Y.

Sardis' goal came off a loose ball in front of the Dutchmen's net in the 47th minute, and Armas sealed the win by converting a penalty kick in the 90th minute. The Terps, ranked No. 13 by Soccer America, out-shot Hofstra, 13-2, in the second half, and 19-8 for the game.

A physical contest, there were seven yellow cards issued and 49 fouls called.

Marshall 2, Navy 0: The Thundering Herd (2-0) got a goal in each half by Norman Dotch to win the championship of the Navy Classic.

Towson 3, St. Francis, Pa., 0: Richie Moller, Adam Lowe and Johannes Ruth each scored first-half goals as the Tigers (1-1) shut out the Red Flash (1-1) in the second game of the Navy Classic.

Philadelphia Textile 2, UMBC 0: Tournament MVP Patrick Morris broke open a scoreless game at 50: 17 and freshman Danny Murtagh scored an insurance goal at 61: 46 to give Philadelphia Textile (2-0) the victory in the championship game of the UMBC Kick-Off Classic.

Mount St. Mary's 1, Rider 0: Jeff Link headed in a corner kick from Mark Southern in the 43rd minute to send the Mountaineers to victory in the championship game of the Pepsi/All Sport Mount Soccer Classic.

The Mount held the Broncs to just seven shots for the game in avenging a 5-4 overtime loss to Rider last season.

Women's soccer

Loyola 1, Towson 0: Junior midfielder Jamie DeSoto scored at 80: 52 to lift the Greyhounds (2-0) to victory in the Towson Invitational. The win marked the fourth consecutive time that Loyola has defeated the Tigers (1-1) by 1-0.

Mount St. Mary's 2, Howard 1: Sarah McGinley converted a pass from Christy Wicks in the 87th minute to lift the Mountaineers to victory in the final round of the Towson Invitational.

Despite the Mountaineers' outshooting the Bison, 35-3, Howard (0-2) took the early lead on its first shot of the game, which came just 2: 12 into the contest. The Mountaineers tied the game on a penalty kick by Amanda Gilbert.

Navy 1, Villanova 0: Junior midfielder Anne Kipp scored off a feed from sophomore Shannon Filbin with 28 minutes left, giving the visitors their first win of the season.
