Overlooked opportunity:

Few managers go looking for jobs in companies that have recently had layoffs, fired the president or seen their stock price plummet, but outplacement expert John Challenger says some may be bypassing a good opportunity. A company in turmoil, he says, is a company in need. "In an atmosphere of instability, the company has a more urgent need for qualified people than in many stable firms," Challenger said.

Vacation time:

One in five American workers does not get paid vacations, reports the Aragon Consulting Group of St. Louis, which recently surveyed 400 companies nationwide. The average vacation for workers who do get paid time off is 2.68 weeks per year, the survey found. Vacation allotment varies from one week up, and about one-third of workers receive two weeks each year. The Aragon study found that nearly 40 percent of workers can roll vacation time into the next year, while 12.9 percent say their employer is willing to pay them the cash value of unused vacation days as an incentive to skip vacation.
