Players to watch

August 22, 1997|By Danielle Rumore

Peter Boulware: The Ravens' top draft pick has finally made his highly anticipated arrival, practicing for the first time Tuesday. As a strong-side linebacker, he's pushing Cornell Brown back on the depth chart. Boulware will play tonight, but the coaches have yet to determine how much.

Dorian Brew: One of three right cornerbacks, Brew has finally pushed last year's second-round draft pick, DeRon Jenkins, out of the nickel-back spot. Brew will be used to cover the slot receiver. Watch to see if he has more speed and finishing power than Jenkins.

Jay Graham: Tonight's game marks the return of this promising rookie, who has recovered from a knee injury suffered against the Jets two weeks ago. Graham rushed for 58 yards on 14 carries in his first preseason contest. With Bam Morris out until the fifth game of the regular season, Graham's return should lift some of the rushing burden from Earnest Byner.

Stevon Moore: Moore will play strong safety in his first game of the season after recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery. He is one of the Ravens' veterans on defense and has been one of the team leaders in tackles the past four seasons. He will most likely play a quarter or two against the Bills.

Eric Green: Green has twice had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in the past 15 months. The tight end sat out the previous two preseason games because they were played on artificial turf. He has had an excellent training camp.

Earnest Byner: Byner had a less-than-stellar rushing game last week, totaling 9 yards on eight carries. With Morris' absence, Graham's return will take some of the pressure off Byner, who is just 126 rushing yards shy of making the NFL's top 20 career rushing list.

Donald Richard: With the final roster cut just two days away, this receiver needs to shine after catching one pass for 26 yards last week. The team plans to cut one or two more receivers, and Richard is on the bubble. The practice roster is also a possibility for this rookie free agent.
