NEIGHBORS

HOT TUBS in a school parking lot? That's the plan for Wednesday at River Hill High School.

Here's what they're for:

On Saturday, cyclists ages 7 to 77 will begin the 1997 Cycle Across Maryland tour.

Cyclists choose a 300-mile six-day tour or a 150-mile three-day tour, both beginning in Bowie.

After traveling to LaPlata, stopping at Lusby overnight and for a day of rest on Monday, the group of more than 1,200 riders -- including Roger Rinker, pastor of Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lisbon -- will head to Harwood and Clarksville.

About 800 hardy souls who complete the 300-mile course will camp at River Hill High School on Wednesday night to enjoy the hospitality of some of our neighborhood's most enthusiastic volunteers -- and relax tired muscles in the hot tubs.

Susan and Gary Rosenbaum, members of River Hill's Booster Club, and Don Van Dusen, River Hill's athletic director, are the hosts.

Rosenbaum, who has participated in the CAM tour, has offered suggestions to make the stop enjoyable for riders, according to tour official Tami Lebedevitch.

Food and entertainment will be featured on the River Hill campus from noon to 10: 30 p.m.

Susan Clime, a River Hill parent, is coordinating food concessions.

Joanne Bryan has worked for months to offer entertainment to cyclists and community members.

Free entertainment from noon to 5: 30 p.m. includes music, gymnastics demonstrations, performances by Dance Dimensions, Suzuki School of Music of Maryland Inc. and the Drama Club of Howard Community College.

Five movies will run continuously in the afternoon.

At 8: 30 p.m., you can join the crowd to hear a concert in the school gym by Orlando Phillips and Triniband, a Caribbean music group. The group will perform reggae, soca, calypso, and other Latin music and jazz.

Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults; $2 for seniors and students.

Many workers, coordinated by Kathy Hutson and Jean Rieg, will help make this tour stop a hit with cyclists -- and a successful fund-raiser for the River Hill Booster Club.

Student groups from River Hill -- including the football team, cheerleaders and National Honor Society -- have volunteered to take part.

More volunteers are needed. Students may earn community service hours helping at River Hill. Call Hutson at 410-461-4073 or Rieg at 410-531-5917 to volunteer.

Carey Wright is in charge of signs to direct the crowds. Joe Doyle leads the transportation effort.

Donna and Terry Kelley are helping to coordinate the Music Boosters and assisting Don Van Dusen with the facilities.

Al and Tam Dyer have made a simplified map of River Hill for the program, and Cathe Gavelek is treasurer.

Lions help out

Glenwood's Lions Club is strong and growing.

At the county fair, Aug. 9-16, western Howard countians will buy hamburgers, hot dogs, sodas, snowballs and more from the Glenwood Lions Club food booth -- a fixture at the fair.

Students and other community members may help the Lions Club with their food sales this year.

Students who participate may earn volunteer hours for the community service required for graduation.

They will receive reimbursement for parking -- and with the parking receipt, free entry to the fair and free food while working at the booth.

To participate, call Warren Strader at 410-442-2358.

Members of the Glenwood Lions Club invite you to take advantage of their free loan closet.

If you need a hospital bed, walker, crutches or other medical equipment, call Brian Clare at 410-489-5135.

Search for a pastor

Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church's pastor of 17 years, Paul Lautenschlager, retired at the end of June.

Eleanor Dowd of Williamsport is the interim pastor for Shepherd of the Glen, while Carole Kramer of Cooksville leads a Call Committee in the task of finding a new pastor.

Members of Shepherd of the Glen will develop a policy statement to begin the quest for a spiritual leader.

Media fair

Shepherd of the Glen has set Sept. 6 as the date for its Media Fair.

Through the end of August, you can donate print and electronic media to the church for its sale.

Donate used or new books, magazines, audio and video tapes, compact discs, records and computer programs.

Drop your donations in the box by the door at the side of the church. Leave a note requesting a receipt to use at tax time, if you wish.

The church is at 14551 Burntwoods Road, at Shady Lane, in Glenwood. Call 410-442-1204.

Neighbors

Alan Kramer of Cooksville graduated from the Johns Hopkins University this spring with a degree in chemical engineering.

After a monthlong trip with his parents, Fulton and Carole, to visit relatives in Germany, he began work this week at W. R. Grace's office in Baltimore.

The Kramers are entertaining distant cousin Carsten Hentschel, of Germany, who arrived yesterday for a three-week stay.

Welcome a student

If you'd like to add a new dimension to your life, consider being a host for an exchange student.

Twenty-five western Howard families enjoyed successful four-week visits with teen-agers from Spain this summer.

When the students left to return to Spain yesterday afternoon, tears flowed as families and guests exchanged good-byes.

Students ages 15 to 18 have applied to spend the coming school year in our area.

These carefully selected youngsters bring their own spending money and have their own insurance.

Families provide room, board and a loving environment, according to EF Foundation coordinator Lisa Solomon, who has welcomed several students into her home.

Guest teen-agers arrive in August for the school year and return in June. River Hill High School's first exchange student lived with Gary, Susan, and Marni Rosenbaum last year.

Barbara and Allan Cohen of Glenelg will be hosts for Mandy Mucha from Germany -- who will attend River Hill this year.
