AT THE END of this school year, the county's Black Student Achievement Program honored African-American graduates in a "Celebration of Excellence."
Each student was encouraged to write a goal statement, which was printed in the evening's brochure.
A sampling:
Jennifer Natalie Ruth Sigler says, "Ten years from now, I will be psychiatrist. I hope to have completed medical school, and be on my way to starting my own private practice."
Quianna Simira Butler hopes that she will "be an independent woman working for a very well-known and prestigious company as a marketing representative."
Here's Austen Joseph Dummett's goal: "Ten years from now, I will be working in the music field -- either recording, composing or performing."
Sigler, Butler and Dummett attended Centennial High School with honorees Terri Nicole Baker, Cody Roystine Cook, Alicia Janelle Graf, Tony Richardio Harrison Jr., Mahoganey Joy Hutt, Traci McPhail, Jennifer Lauren Sorrell and Tamara Teneille Wilson.
Howard High School celebrated 36 Black Student Achievement Program honorees.
Jason Neil Henry's goal is "to be in sports medicine or an officer in the U.S. military. My main goal will be to open a practice with my sister."
Nakina Latoy Stewart hopes that "I will have my own hair salon."
Erika Elizabeth Lewis will "have successfully started my own Internet Web page designing business."
Other honored Howard students include: Nikia Diane Andrews, Erika Michelle Archbald, Brian Garrett Baham, Alonzo Patrice Bolden, Shannon Toi Bonner, Brian Joseph Broadus, Owen Powell Brown, Carroll Eugene Burley, Chanelle Renee Carter, Maya Danielle Cook, Arat Prasad Doddanna, Anthony Clifford Elphage, Nicole Lanee Farmer, Tiffany Marcia Ferrell, Teron Anthony Gary, Erica Racqel-Lynn Gresham.
Also, Maya Catherine Harris, Teann Cachelle Hawkins, Kathleen Suzanne Hise, Korey Alexander Jackson, Ryan Lance Jeffery, Dionne Ericka Jones, Kenny LaGuerre, Nicole Monique Mack, Susan Seuri Mancho, Carissa Tyffani McCleary, Rita Irene Page, Coleen Parker, Lisa Catherine Pasteur, N'Jai Elizabeth Patters, Alisa Marie Reese, Quiana Saunders and Daisy Michelle Tillman.
Mount Hebron High School's Joelle Roy hopes that "I will have a Master of Arts degree in child psychology and a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and Spanish."
Ericka Lillian Oliver wants to be "one of the best pediatricians in the country."

Music among the trees
Wednesday's Sunset Serenade is by the Lone Starlet Band, playing jazz, country and New Orleans blues in the open air.
