As part of its monthlong look at the Hollywood Hustons...

Best bet

July 08, 1997|By Chris Kaltenbach

As part of its monthlong look at the Hollywood Hustons, Turner Classic Movies presents a foursome of films directed by John. "Key Largo" (8 p.m.) includes not only Hollywood's favorite heat-generating couple, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, but an Oscar-winning turn from Claire Trevor; almost as much fun is "The Asphalt Jungle" (10 p.m.), about a jewel heist that goes bad (the film includes a blink-or-you'll- miss-it appearance by Marilyn Monroe). Gregory Peck shines as literature's most obsessed fisherman in "Moby Dick" (midnight), and real-life war hero Audie Murphy stars in the Civil War drama "The Red Badge of Courage" (2 a.m.).

If you want to check out an earlier generation of Hustons, check out "Ann Vickers" (6 p.m.), with John's dad, Walter, supporting Irene Dunne's performance in this film about a woman dedicated to penal reform.
