Midsummer Village Faire
For a weekend celebration including a summer solstice concert, puppet shows, militia muster, strolling musicians, arts and crafts, food and children's activities, attend the Midsummer Village Faire at Historic St. Mary's City.
Sponsored by the Neighbors on the Historic Townlands, Historic St. Mary's City, St. Mary's College of Maryland and Trinity Parish, the two-day event also includes narrated river cruises along the St. Mary's River. And you can learn the fine art of creating a traditional Southern Maryland stuffed ham and other tasty morsels during cooking demonstrations.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Summer Solstice Concert, featuring the Chesapeake Brass Quintet, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's College waterfront. Take a picnic supper or buy one. Faire and concert admission is free. Call 301-862-0990 or 301-862-0280. Celebrate the Celtic cultures of Cornwall, Ireland, Scotland, the Isle of Man, Galicia, Spain and Brittany, France, during the fourth annual Oatlands Celtic Festival this weekend in Leesburg, Va.
Oatlands' 260 acres of rolling green hills will serve as backdrop for continuous live ethnic music, Scottish games, Irish dancers, Welsh singers, storytellers and Celtic food. Demonstrations of thatching, weaving, blacksmithing and glassmaking also are featured. Celtic clans and societies will help trace family roots, and experts will lead workshops on harp making.
Events take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Daily admission is $10 for adults, $5 ages 6-12; family pass for up to four is $30. Call 703-777-3174.
