Man killed in five-car pile-up on I-97

June 11, 1997

A Crofton man was killed and several others drivers were injured yesterday in a five-car accident on Interstate 97 in Glen Burnie that backed up traffic for two hours.

State police said Alonzo L. Owens, 45, of Glen Burnie was southbound on I-97 near Quarterfield Road when his Nissan Altima veered onto the right shoulder, striking construction barrels.

As he steered back onto the road, his car crossed in front of a Toyota driven by Sandra Emenheiser, 52, of Elkton. Emenheiser's car rear-ended Owens' car, and both cars then hit a Chevrolet Blazer driven by Beatrice E. Tracy, 55, of Baltimore, police said.

The Blazer flipped over five times, stopping in the center lane, police said.

Tracy was treated at North Arundel Hospital and released. Owens was not injured.

Emenheiser's Toyota continued out of control across the left shoulder and the median into the northbound lanes, where it hit a Chrysler driven by Vahid Sedghi, of Stevensville, then ran head-on into an Acura driven by Worthington S. Keville Jr, 57, of the 1400 block of Crofton Parkway.

Keville was pronounced dead at the scene. Emenheiser was in critical but stable condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Sedghi was treated for minor injuries at North Arundel Hospital and released.

Police said charges were pending against Owens.

A 19-year-old Glen Burnie man has been charged with robbing another man at gunpoint after asking him his shoe size.

David Boyd, 22, of Glen Burnie told police that he and an acquaintance were near the basketball courts in the 7900 block of Nolpark Court about 9 p.m. Sunday when the man asked Boyd what size his shoes were.

The man then pulled out a gun and demanded Boyd's shoes and gold necklace. After Boyd turned over the items, the man walked to an apartment on Nolpark Court, police said.

Boyd called police, who arrested Devin Phillips, 19, of the 7900 block of Nolpark at his home. He was charged with armed robbery.

A Montgomery County man and a Brooklyn woman who were caught in a stolen truck in Laurel Saturday were arrested on drug charges, county police said.

Officers Kevin Falls and Bobby Crawford were in the 300 block of Brockbridge Road in Laurel when they saw a speeding car hit a curb. When they stopped the car, they found that it had been reported stolen from Montgomery County in April.

Police said the driver and passenger were arrested and searched, and that a bottle with several pieces of crack cocaine was found on one of them.

Officers reported finding more of the substance in the center console.

Darrell Eugene Matthews, 25, of the 100 block of Ashton Road in Ashton and Tandrya Foreman, 19, of the 18700 block of New Hampshire Ave. were charged with possession and possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine.

Matthews was also charged with possession of a stolen auto, driving while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and driving with a suspended license.
