Police arrest man accused in shooting

A man suspected in the holdup of an Amoco gas station yesterday morning in Remington and in the shooting of an attendant three times was arrested hours later after police chased him down Howard Street.

Police said the alleged gunman had been hiding in Ray's Auto Paint and Body shop five blocks from the gas station and confronted an employee, Ray Jones III, after police searched the building and left without finding him.

Jones, who was armed with a gun, told police that the suspect reached into his waistband. Jones said he feared the man was going for a gun, so he fired five shots at the suspect, but missed, police said. Jones was not charged.

A police officer saw the man run from the repair shop and chased him two blocks down Howard Street before arresting him at gunpoint.

Leonard Anthony Washington, 36, of Princess Drive in White Marsh was charged with attempted robbery, first-degree assault and using a handgun in the commission of a felony.

The gas station attendant, Jerome Prout, 23, was shot twice in the chest and once in the right leg, and was in fair condition yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The incident began about 7 a.m. when a man walked into the gas station in the 2000 block of N. Howard St. and tried to rob Prout, police said. Prout and the gunman struggled, knocking over display cases, before Prout was shot, police said.

Charles Venter, 37, was walking into the station to buy cigarettes during the struggle and couldn't get in because a candy display case had been knocked over and was blocking a door.

A. W. Summers, who was in his Checker Cab parked in the Amoco lot, said he saw the gunman run from the store and chased him up Howard Street. Summers told police the man ran into the auto repair shop.
