Masonic open house

King David's Lodge No. 68 of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons is holding a strawberry social open house at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Community United Methodist Church, 8680 Fort Smallwood Road.

The lodge will honor the first winners of its scholarship awards program, Jonathan Dowling and John Rios, 1997 graduates of Chesapeake High.

"We searched for criteria in establishing the memorial awards to honor our past masters, Ernest Drohan and Raymond Bolander, and came upon the idea of honoring members of a fraternal group for boys, Boy Scouts," said Phil Reyes, lodge spokesman.

The lodge looked for Eagle Scouts, the "highest award a young man can earn in Scouting," Reyes said.

The free event is open to all.

Strawberry festival

What would the beginning of summer be without a strawberry festival? A midweek one at that.

Solley United Methodist Church, 7600 Solley Road, is putting on its festival from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Dessert, cake topped with strawberries, and a beverage are $3.50 for adults, $2 for children under 12. Carryouts are $3.50.

Visitors also can dine on John Mason's crab soup (always a sellout), barbecue and hot dogs. Cakes will be on sale, and there will be a white elephant table.

Information: 410-255-2750.
