CHILLY temperatures a week ago today could not cool the soaring spirits of Chesapeake High School's Class of 1997.

From the opening strains of "Pomp and Circumstance" through the speeches and songs of fellow graduates, the presentations of awards, honors and diplomas, their smiles warmed the hearts of everyone in Rhodes Stadium.

But the night before many of Pasadena's best and brightest sons and daughters took their bows, they were honored at a Senior Awards Night at the school.

Thirty-four seniors received the Presidential Academic Fitness Award. They are: Bradley Akamine, Glen Ansted, Kristin Beuerle, John Bland, Lauren Bosma, Joanna Buckley, Brandi Burkhardt, Jessica Carter, William Cieslak, Dustin Clift, Michael Cline, Allison Coffman, Timothy Daugherty, Jennifer Davis, Meg Devoe, Jonathan Dowling, Mariah Frank, Renata Freburger, Christine Burney, Alexis Hillock, Michael Hodgins, Elizabeth Horstman, Jennifer Hug, Malia Johnston, Angela Kisling, Erik Kittle, Amanda Lesher, Bryan Napier, Robert O'Connell, Saul Pollock, Mandy Rittmeyer, Rachel Santora, Brittany Schilling and Eric Thompson.

Joanna Buckley received commended scholar accolades from the National Merit program, along with Jessica Carter and Jennifer Davis. Jennifer also was recognized as a finalist in the Maryland Distinguished Scholars program along with Brandi Burkhardt and Amanada Lesher.

Department awards were given to Rachel Santora, art; Bradley Akamine, business education; Jennifer Davis, English; Catherine Mahan, family and consumer sciences; Rachel Pettyplace, foreign language; Kristin Beuerle, mathematics; Jessica Carter, instrumental music; Brandi Burkhardt, vocal music; Thaddeus Lesniewski, physical education; Elizabeth Fath, science; Amanda Lesher, social studies; Angela Zittle, technical education; and Joanna Buckley, psychology.

Military academy appointments were received by Michael Cline, Air Force Academy, and Shannon Harper, Merchant Marine Academy.

Twenty students received Maryland Merit Scholars awards: Lisa Arnold, Ryane Bellarin, Kristin Beuerle, Joanna Buckley, Dustin Clift, Michael Cline, Allison Coffman, Jennifer Davis, Adam Deising, Meg Devoe, Elizabeth Fath, Mariah Frank, Christine Burney, Alexis Hilock, Jennifer Hug, Amanda Lesher, Saul Pollack, Rachel Santora, Brittany Schilling and Eric Thompson.

Maryland Senatorial Scholarships were awarded to: Glen Ansted, Laura Basil, Dustin Clift, Brian Griffiths, Christopher Hammett, Shantyl Makell, Aubrey Anne Ochs, Rachel Pettyplace, William Redmond, Sarah Watts, Harry Wille and April Winch.

House of Delegates scholarships went to Suzanne Busch, Jennifer Davis and Erin Mundy.

Other awards and scholarships went to Timothy Daugherty, Army scholar-athlete; Ryane Bellarin, Army scholar-athlete, CHS Athletic Boosters and Pasadena Business Association; Lauron Schirmacher, Army Montgomery G.I. Bill award; Kristin Beuerle, Navy math award, Association of Old Crows award; Elizabeth Fath, Navy science award; Bradley Akamine, academic scholarship, University of Maryland Baltimore County; Michael Bianco, National Honor Society scholarship, Villa Julie College; Robert Bookhamer, athletic scholarship, Limestone College; Lauren Bosma, presidential scholarship, Villa Julie theater scholarship; Joanna Buckley, Dana and presidential scholarship, Muhlenberg College, Scholarship for Scholars-social studies, CHS student government scholarship and Jean Beaudin White Memorial Scholarship; Brandi Burkhardt, citizenship award, Scholarship for Scholars-Baltimore Symphony, Lake Shore Rotary, Jacobsville Elementary PTA; Jessica Carter, Marvin Perry scholarship, Goucher College; Jennifer Davis, Robert E.
