Get ready to dive in: Pools are to open this weekend

LAST ONE in ...!" will be heard at every outdoor pool in Columbia when they open this weekend.

Pool managers have received their assignments. Be sure to say "Hi" and at the same timelearn the rules of the pools -- and remember to wear sun block.

East Columbia pool managers are Lori Goode at Dasher Green, Owen Brown village; Marc Malchak at Dickinson, Kings Contrivance village; Marloe Apelman at Hopewell, Owen Brown village; Courtney Adams at Huntington, Kings Contrivance village; Kelly Viglione at Jeffers Hill, Long Reach village; James Kennedy at Kendall Ridge, Long Reach village; Richard Bueller at Locust Park, Long Reach village; Holly Stover at MacGills Common, Kings Contrivance village; Melissa Schnaar at Phelps Luck, Long Reach village; Jeffrey Six at Stevens Forest, Oakland Mills village; Deanne Lenehan at Talbott Springs, Oakland Mills village; Steve Schnaar at Thunder Hill, Oakland Mills village.

Ron Brown, swim team manager, invites all Oakland Mills swim team parents to come to a meeting at 7 p.m. May 30 at the Stevens Forest pool.

The meet schedule, team swim suits and the importance of parental support for the swimmers will be discussed.

Warm weather music

After a swim, take the time to enjoy the free concerts in several villages.

East Columbia's Kings Contrivance has lunchtime entertainment at 11: 30 a.m. Fridays in the village shopping center through August.

Sue Trainor's folk music is featured this week.

In Oakland Mills, Thursday evening summer concerts begin with the country sounds of Out Behind the Barn on July 10 and end Aug. 7 with the motown swing of Amaretto.

Oakland Mills Merchants Association, Oakland Mills Community Association and Patuxent Publishing Co. are the sponsors.

Hickory Ridge, Wilde Lake and Dorsey's Search village centers have free lunchtime concerts, too.

East Columbia's Partners in Song will be at Hickory Ridge and Sue & Sue will sing at Dorsey's Search on Thursday.

Oriando Phillips' Caribbean music will be featured at Wilde Lake on Friday.

Community service awards

Four Owen Brown village teen-agers have been named winners of Columbia Council's Spear Family Community Service Scholarship.

Linda Kao, Amy Welsch and Kristen Pierce attend Oakland Mills High School.

Erica Dawson attends Takoma Academy.

Atholton High's Holly Maggio, of River Hill, is a winner, too.

They will all be guests of honor at a reception at Historic Oakland tomorrow evening.

Animal pests

Columbia Association's environmental specialist, Chick Rhodehamel, and Howard County's Justina Taylor will share their expertise on pesky crittersthat get under porches and into outdoor buildings at a meeting at 7: 30 p.m. Thursday in the Owen Brown Community Center, 6800 Cradlerock Way.

They'll also discuss property owners' encroachment on open space land that borders their property.
