Washington College goalkeeper Andy Taibl stopped a shot with 13 seconds left as the Shoremen defeated Gettysburg, 10-9, yesterday in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III tournament in Chestertown.
The win puts Washington College in the championship game next Sunday in College Park against Nazareth at 2 p.m. It also was the Shoremen's 18th tournament victory.
Washington College (14-3) took a 9-7 lead entering the fourth quarter and got what proved to be the winning goal from Adam Bond with 8: 38 left in the period. Gettysburg charged back, however, getting two goals from Jamie Bateman within 30 seconds that pulled the Bullets within 10-9. Taibl, who had 14 saves, then secured the Shoremen's second consecutive trip to the title game by stopping a shot by Gettysburg's Brett Strait.
Nazareth 16, Ohio Wesleyan 9: Dennis Foley scored four goals, including two in the decisive second quarter, to lead host Nazareth to its semifinal victory.
Joe Spada and Ryan McDermott each added three goals for the Golden Flyers (12-3), who trailed 4-2 after one quarter.
