Miller stays unbeaten as Old Mill wins

May 13, 1997

Danny Miller threw a four-hitter for his 10th victory against no defeats and second baseman Chad Gerben homered twice, including a grand slam, as top-ranked Old Mill ripped No. 8 Severna Park, 9-2, in the 4A East quarterfinals at Severna Park.

Miller struck out 12 and walked three in notching the victory, which raised the Patriots' overall record to 21-2.

Z Old Mill drew first blood with a run in the second inning on a fielder's choice, added three more in the fourth and broke it open in the sixth on Gerben's slam.

Gerben led off the fifth with a solo homer to right-center and sealed the victory with his grand slam off reliever Pat Boucher to make it 9-0. Falcons starter and loser Darryl DeSalvo, who shut out Old Mill, 5-0, a couple weeks ago, was chased in favor of Boucher in the sixth.

Boucher broke Miller's string of 19 1/3 consecutive innings with a bases-empty homer in the sixth and Casey Stidham followed with another homer for the Falcons' two runs. Miller had pitched a no-hitter against Chesapeake and a 10-0 triumph over Arundel in the county championship game to start his string of goose eggs.
