Howard County police are investigating a single-vehicle accident on U.S. 1 in Elkridge over the weekend in which a 29-year-old Anne Arundel County man drove his four-wheel drive vehicle into a utility pole.

Police said Joseph Leroy Decker of the 5500 block of Carvel St. in Churchton was seriously injured Sunday about 5 p.m. when his Chevrolet Blazer hit a utility pole while traveling north along U.S. 1 at Loudon Avenue.

A police report said Decker's truck drifted off the right side of the road and hit the pole.

Decker, who police said was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.

According to a preliminary investigation, excessive speed and driver error were the cause of the accident.
