Records, Storck Capture Fourth Municipal Title In Five Years

Closing Round Of 69 Gives Pair One-stroke Victory

April 28, 1997|By John W. Stewart | John W. Stewart,SUN STAFF

The pairing of Joe Records-Larry Storck returned to its winning ways in the annual two-man team championship of the Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation yesterday at Mount Pleasant Golf Course. A closing round of 2-under-par 69 gave them a 36-hole total of 140, and their fourth title in the past five years.

It took a series of successful long-range putts to turn the trick, however, as four teams finished within two shots of the winners. Records said later that neither player could remember making any long putts in their earlier title runs from 1993-95.

Records dropped putts of 10 feet, 50 feet and 20 feet in a four-hole stretch midway of the back nine, enabling the team to pull away from a tightly bunched field. A bogey at the 17th made it close, but Records' par at the last hole ensured the victory.

Earlier, two missed-green bogeys had offset some putting heroics by Storck, who made putts from 30 feet at the fifth hole and 40 feet at the sixth. This marked the 11th two-man title in 12 starts for the Records-Storck combination.

There were three other 69s, and these teams claimed the next three places in the 60-team field.

Bill Stout-Dave Rasley had three birdies and one bogey in shooting 72-69141, followed by Terry Mayer-Steve Southern with four birdies and two bogeys for 73-69142, and Adrian Druzgala-Jim Castagna, 73-69142.

Druzgala-Castagna had a closing tour that included a 14th-hole eagle-2 by Castagna that got them to 2-under.
