April 28, 1997|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A 14-year-old boy was fatally shot early yesterday when four youths rode by on bicycles and one fired shots at him and his friends in his East Baltimore neighborhood, police said.

The victim, Damel Kelly, was standing on the sidewalk near his home in the 4500 block of Freedomway West talking with about six friends about 12: 45 a.m. when the shooting occurred, said city homicide Detective Joseph Kleinota.

One of the youths riding by said, " `Where's the money?' as he pulled out a gun," Kleinota said.

The group on the sidewalk fled as two shots were fired, and the victim was hit once in the back as he ran toward his home, Kleinota said. Damel was pronounced dead at 1: 34 a.m. at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
