Hits And Misses

April 26, 1997|By Roch Kubatko

On the field: It wasn't the best of nights for the left side of the Orioles' infield. Third baseman Cal Ripken and shortstop Mike Bordick each committed an error on high throws to first, though neither miscue led to a run. But the defense shone in the seventh inning when second baseman Roberto Alomar dived to his left to smother a grounder and throw out Wil Cordero, and Tony Tarasco made a leaping catch in left field to rob Troy O'Leary of a home run.

In the dugout: Manager Davey Johnson gave Jeffrey Hammonds the green light with two outs in the sixth, and Hammonds stole second despite a pitchout. Eric Davis then lined a single to left to score Hammonds for a 1-0 lead.

In the clubhouse: "I'm not that good at talking about my injuries." -- Brady Anderson, who didn't elaborate much on the condition of his cracked rib.
