University of Miami assistant Mike Jaskulski is expected to be named Towson State basketball coach at a news conference scheduled for 11 a.m. today at the Towson Center.

Jaskulski and Towson State athletic director Wayne Edwards apparently agreed yesterday on a contract worth $85,000 a year.

Terry Truax, whose contract was not renewed after last season, was making a base salary of approximately $65,000 a year.

Jaskulski, 43, was scheduled to meet with the Towson players last night.

The players voted Friday to support longtime assistant Jim Meil for the head coaching position.

Meil, who has been a Towson assistant for 15 years and has been running the team for the past several weeks, declined to comment yesterday. In recent weeks, he has gained considerable support for the job from members of the university's academic community.

Jaskulski could not be reached yesterday for comment, but he said Wednesday night that he was optimistic about becoming the Tigers' next coach, though "several issues" still needed to be worked out.

Jaskulski received a quick indoctrination into the importance of lacrosse at Towson State, being told there would be no news conference on Wednesday to announce the new basketball coach because of the Towson-Loyola game.

"Did Towson win that lacrosse game?" Jaskulski asked Wednesday night.

Edwards said yesterday: "We had a large number of quality candidates. Towson State basketball will be in good hands."

Jaskulski, an assistant basketball coach at Maine during 1988-93, was recommended to Edwards by former Maine athletic director Kevin White, now athletic director at Arizona.

After leaving Maine, Jaskulski became an assistant to Miami coach Leonard Hamilton and just completed his fourth season with the Hurricanes.

Jaskulski's only head coaching experience was at Division III Loras College (Iowa) in 1984-88. He went 62-48 at Loras for a .564 winning percentage.

Previously, he was an assistant at Loras for two seasons and, before that, an assistant at St. Norbert College (Wis.) of the NAIA for six years. Jaskulski played his collegiate basketball at St. Norbert.

Carl Meil, Jim Meil's father, said his son was told yesterday by Edwards that Jaskulski was selected for the position because he has head coaching experience.
