Madsen Birdies No. 18 To Win Magpa Title

April 25, 1997|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

MANASSAS, Va. -- Steve Madsen, head professional at Lakewood Country Club in Rockville, birdied the 18th hole to edge Jack Skilling, 1-up, in the final of the annual Middle Atlantic PGA match-play championship at Virginia Oaks Golf Club yesterday.

Madsen, making his first appearance in the finals of this event, thwarted two-time champion Skilling, from White Flint Golf Park, with a 25-foot birdie putt at the last green. Skilling then missed a chance to extend the match as his putt from 15 feet slid by the cup.

Madsen, the current Maryland Open champion, went 2-up on the front nine, but two Skilling birdies evened the match after 14 holes. For the round, Madsen was 3-under par, Skilling 2-under.
