Cubs: Ryne Sandberg is one home run away from tying Joe Morgan for the career lead among second basemen with 266. Sandberg has 270 career homers, but five came when he played third base in his rookie year of 1982.

Expos: Lee Smith pitched the ninth inning last night for his second save, the 475th of his career. It was his 999th relief appearance. In 26 innings over 22 appearances at Olympic Stadium, he has not allowed a run, picking up 16 saves.

Giants: San Francisco's 14-4 mark matches that of the 1971 team for the best start since the club moved to San Francisco in 1958. The Giants are 7-1 in one-run games.
