Harney Man, 41, Pleads Guilty To Going On Police Car Joy Ride

April 23, 1997

A Harney man pleaded guilty in Carroll County Circuit Court yesterday to going with a neighbor on a joy ride in a state police cruiser last year.

In return for the plea, Scott C. Craig, 41, will be sentenced on July 22 to no more than two years in prison, prosecutor Tracy A. Gilmore said.

According to court records, Craig and Daniel D. Connell, 18, were on their way to the courthouse in Westminster on Oct. 23 when they saw the unattended patrol car parked at the 140 Village shopping center.

Craig was a passenger as Connell drove, Gilmore said.

The men were arrested several hours later near Gettysburg, Pa., after turning on the car's emergency lights and driving into mailboxes, prosecutors said.

Connell pleaded guilty last month to theft of more than $300. His sentencing is scheduled for June 17.

Craig pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, the unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, and a related conspiracy charge.
